Q. My septic tank or house drains are backing up.  What is happening?

A.  There are several answers to this problem including:

Q. What can I do to protect my septic tank and tile bed from failing?

A. There are a number of things that you can do to prolong the life of your septic:

Q. Does your excavation quotes include bedrock should it be encountered?

A. No, encountering bedrock is an unknown for the most part and is an extra cost per hour or per cubic yard.

Q. How wide should a driveway be?

A. It's always better to be wider than narrow.  I recommend 10-12' minimum.

Q. How deep should driveway gravel be placed after excavation?

A. Soil conditions vary from site to site and type of traffic loads i.e. big trucks.  You must always remove at the very least the topsoil layer to place gravel.  This may range from 4-8" in most local areas.  Depending on the loads being placed on the driveway there should be at least a 6" granular "A" or 5/8" gravel.  If heavier loads are anticipated especially in the spring then a 6" base of coarser 3" minus aggregate should precede the gravel.

Q. Is drainage of the building foundation or a road important?

A. I cannot emphasize enough how important drainage is.  The structural integrity and durability of building foundations and roads are hinging upon proper drainage of ground and surface water.  If proper drainage is not achieved there is a very real possibility that expensive repairs will be necessary.

Q. Why are "big foot" foundation tubes required for some deck installations?

A. "Big foot" foundation tubes are larger in area at the bottom of the tube to spread out the loads being exerted on the soil.  This is to prevent settlement.
